"Maximum Vaultage Vol 1"

a Single by The Woodleigh Research Facility on 23 August 2024
Released in 2024 digitally on bandcamp but tracks credited as 2018

Press release by Kris Needs:
Starting like the unruly bastard cousin of Phonox Nights, heavyweight ‘oompy boompty’ rump-shaker ‘Protect The Innocent’ bashes down the door with spleen-cleaving kick and juddering sequence, punctuated by raw synth stabs resonating like a flatulent rhino’s rectal turbo-blast. Gaining steam, the ethereal space synth and luminescent bass gonads are lathered in subaquatic swells from Satan’s portaloo countered by twittering seagull’s truss action.

The track then slams the door on the four four chug to launch fearlessly into the unknown with ‘Vellichor’ - conjoining “vellum” (parchment) and “ichor” (the fluid that flows in the veins of Greek gods) to describe “the strange wistfulness of used bookshops”. Built on a pulsing rhythm surge constructed from a mountain of old musique concrete 78s into an African hi-life pyjama party, the track builds its euphoric momentum lashing violin and flute shards with coruscating synths and subtle strings, conjuring the more extreme experiments of late trailblazing polymath Arthur Russell colliding with ‘Sueno Latino’.

Finally, ‘Levene’ is a mind-blowing cinematic work-out with uncaged Jupiter synth rearing and bucking over deep electronic swathes and spectral glow-worm todger globules. The wayward Jupiter cranks its own alien momentum as it veers between poignant melodies and gut-wrenching cyber-cello ectoplasm, roaring, slipping and sliding on and around any discernible pulse; it seems to be channeling nothing less than the spirit of Public Image Limited’s Keith Levene on Metal Box’s closing track ‘Radio Four’. It’s that stunning, and so’s the whole maiden voyage from Nina’s aptly named Maximum Vaultage series. The new Pandora’s Box is open.
